Ghana: Class one pupils and teachers of St.Agnes
Catholic Primary School in the Eastern Region of Ghana
yesterday staged a massive demonstration to vent their anger on the continuous
use of their classroom for a brothel by some unscrupulous individuals in the
area.
Worryingly, the hooligans leave piles of faeces in the classroom
after their sexual escapades in the night. The angry pupils led by their
teachers marched to the palace of the Queen mother of New Juaben traditional
area, Nana Yaa Dani and later to the New Juaben Municipal assembly to express
their grievance to the Municipal Chief Executive, Dr.Kwaku Owusu
Acheampong.
Speaking to Ghana's DAILY HERITAGE newspaper, Class 1
teacher, Frema Kwakye, intimated that for the past two years, some residents in
the Srodae community, where the school is located, have continuously been
defecating indiscriminately in their classroom.
According to her, this
forces them to use lesson hours to supervise the little children to scrap the
toilet-ridden floor adding that “these people sometimes go to the extent of
smearing faeces on teacher’s table and blackboard.”
She lamented that
“the most annoying aspect of the whole scenario is the fact that these faceless
individuals have turned the classroom into makeshift brothels where they have
sexual intercourse. Instead of covering up their shameful activity, they leave
behind used condoms filled with sperms in the classroom'.”
Madam Frema
explained that, several complaints to opinion leaders and the Catholic education
Unit have yielded no results as the act continues unabated. She said when
the pupils met the incident again yesterday, they decided to boycott class and
stage a demonstration to express their displeasure to the
authorities.
She said the demonstration disrupted teaching and learning
in the whole primary school since the pupils and teachers were all sympathizing
with the children. She explained that even though there is a gate, the
perpetrators have on countless occasions forcibly broken into the room to commit
the offence.
The Headmistress of the School, Margret Allasani, noted
that, they have petitioned the Municipal Chief Executive and are looking forward
to seeing a positive action else there is no option than to advise
themselves. She blamed the community leaders for doing little to stop the
act since the perpetrators are known to them.
Speaking to the paper in an
interview, the MCE, Dr.Kwaku Owusu Acheampong, condemned the act and promised to
take swift action against the perpetrators. He assured that he would
employ the police but, appealed to the community to volunteer information to
enable them crack down on the hooligans.
