Wrong &Faulted Statistics |
Here is a counterclaim published this morning by metro.co.uk;
A report released this morning claiming that Muhammad was Britain’s most popular boy’s name is actually based on seriously faulty maths – and some pretty dubious methodology from its creators, BabyCentre.co.uk.
The report claimed that Muhammad had recently become Britain’s most popular boy’s name – based on the choices of site users on the popular baby advice website.
But an official report from the Office of National Statistics, released in August 2014, and taking in statistics from all around the country, shows that Britain’s most popular boy’s name is, in fact, Oliver.
Mohammad and Mohammed were the most popular boy’s names, respectively in London and West Midlands – but overall, did not even make the top ten.
BabyCentre amalgamated several spellings of Mohammad/Mohammed in order for the name to reach the top spot – a curious move, given that names such as ‘Eric’ and ‘Erik’ are not amalgamated in the site’s rankings.
If one amalgamates all the different forms of the name Oliver (Ollie, Olly, Oliver, etc), then it is still the number-one name for British households, narrowly beating all the variant spellings of Mohammed chosen by BabyCentre users into second place, metro.co.uk reports.
