Is £16billion cash stash left at Russian airport for six years Saddam Hussein's secret fortune?
A stash of £16.75billion in cash that could be Saddam Hussein’s secret fortune has sat unclaimed at a Russian airport since 2007.
The 20 billion euros, all in 100 euro notes, is being stored at a heavily guarded depot.
It was flown to Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport from Frankfurt with no recipient.
“It is possible this is the money of Saddam Hussein,” a source said.
But why the late Iraqi dictator’s ill-gotten gains would emerge in Russia is a mystery.
A security source said it could also be mafia or corrupt officials’ dirty money and added: “There are other possibilities, what about Muammar Gaddafi?”
Documents name Farzin Motlagh, 45, as the sender but he has not claimed the cash.
The Iranian is reportedly wanted internationally on suspicion of fraud.
