PROSECUTORS: A WOMAN WAS SHOT AND KILLED FOLLOWING FACEBOOK DISPUTE

A West Side woman killed another woman at a Homan Square gas station last month after the two had a fight on Facebook, authorities said today.Khalila Southall, 30, is charged with first-degree murder  in the Aug. 26 shooting death of Lakeisha Tate, 28, at a gas station at 3357 W. Harrison St., according to police and prosecutors. Southall was arrested Sept. 3 in Rochester, Minn., on a murder warrant in the case, after fleeing there soon after the shooting, according to prosecutors and Rochester police. 

In a hearing midday today, Southall was ordered held without bail.
Tate, of the 300 block of South Hamlin Avenue, was inside the gas station about 1:40 p.m. Aug. 26 and tried to walk out after buying something when Southall confronted her, assistant state’s attorney Joe Crocker said in a bond hearing today.
The two began to fight in a doorway to the store, and as they were fighting on the ground, Southall pulled out a handgun and shot Tate, prosecutors said. Several witnesses were only feet from the two women when the shooting took place, and it was captured on video from multiple angles, prosecutors said.

Tate, who had been shot in the leg and torso, and left lying on the floor of the gas station, was taken to John H.Stroger Jr. Hospital, where she was declared dead at 5 a.m. on Aug. 27.
When Southall fled, she left behind an identification card. Police found two .25-caliber shell casings at the scene, and later found a .25-caliber semiautomatic handgun at Southall’s boyfriend’s home. At the home, investigators also found a red dress that matched that Southall was seen wearing in the surveillance video.
Investigators were able to obtain a warrant for Southall’s arrest, and when she was taken into custody in Rochester, they travelled there to interview her on Sept. 5.

Southall, of the 900 block of South Lawndale Avenue, told detectives that she and Tate had had a previous dispute on Facebook, and that they did not like each other. Prosecutors did not say what started the Facebook feud.
Southall also admitted to fighting Tate at the gas station and to having a handgun the day of the shooting. Multiple eyewitnesses identified Southall as the shooter after she was brought back to Chicago.
In court today, Southall's defense attorney said she lives with her grandmother and is on disability. She has sarcoidosis, a degenerative lung disease that requires medications to control, her attorney said.
