A baby's scream and shouts of “I’m going to kill you” were traced to an annoying parrot after neighbours called police.
When officers arrived at the home in Recklinghausen, Germany, they found a parrot whose favourite pastime appeared to be impersonating screaming babies.
Its stressed out owner admitted shamefacedly that he had had enough of the bird - and had threatened to kill it if it didn’t stop screeching.
Matrin Meyer, 42, said: “My sister-in-law came to visit two weeks ago and she had a baby, we thought it was amusing when the baby screamed and the parrot copied it because the baby shut up.
"But when my sister-in-law left the parrot carried on practising its baby screams.
"It’s been driving me mad.
He always impersonated what he heard on the television but now is not interested in anything other than baby screams. It’s driving me mad.”
The man promised that he had not seriously intended to harm the parrot but admitted he might well soon be looking for a new owner or possibly looking to leave it to a zoo.
He said: “If you have real baby you at least have the chance of giving it a bottle of milk or something.
"But I don’t get any peace - the parrot simply likes the sound of its own voice and I think it knows it’s driving me mad.”
The bird, an African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus) is found in the primary and secondary rainforest of West and Central Africa and is regarded as one of the most intelligent birds in the world.
Their inclination and ability to mimic speech have made them popular pets.
