The 65-year-old former Minister for Europe admitted faking receipts worth £12,900 for research and translation services between 2005 and 2008.
The ex-MP for Rotherham pleaded guilty to a single count of false accounting at the Old Bailey yesterday. MacShane, who has since quit the Commons, was given bail until sentencing on December 19.
Judge Mr Justice Sweeney warned him: “You will understand, I’m sure, that all sentencing options remain open.”
Police began examining MacShane’s expenses nearly three years ago, but the case was dropped. The probe was reopened last November after a report by the Commons Standards and Privileges Committee.
