A secret stash of gold bars worth more than $1.1million (£680,000) has been found in a plane toilet in India.
Cleaners on the Jet Airways commercial flight discovered the haul of 24 gold bars in two separate bags yesterday, officials said.
The plane was reportedly coming back from Bangkok before making stops in India, including Kolkata airport where the 1kg (2.2lb) of gold was found.
Airport director BP Mishra said: ‘The cleaning staff of the airport were going through their routine duties and found two bags in the toilets of the plane.’
Speaking to the AFP news agency, he said that no arrests had been made in connection with the find and the gold has not been claimed, however local media reported that a suspect was held for questioning.
India is one of the largest gold consumers in the world and imports are seen as a major contribution to the country’s financial deficit.
The government recently raised import duty of gold jewellery for the third time this year in a bid to lower demand for the precious metal. A Daily Star UK report.
