Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor has said sorry to the club's supporters after seeming to enjoy the humiliating defeat against Liverpool.
The 29-year-old was pictured alongside Benoit Assou-Ekotto, with the pair smiling and displaying five fingers - thought by some to be a joke at Spurs' expense.
But today he took to Twitter to plead his innocence and say sorry to those who were offended.
The Togolese striker posted: "I apologise to all Spurs fans who thought from the Assou-Ekotto picture that we were making fun out of the defeat."
"That picture was taken BEFORE the game. I couldn't possibly known the score. I would NEVER DO THAT. That pose is how I pose in all my pictures..."
Fantastically, Adebayor went on to upload three further pictures of him using the same pose - with his close friend and former team-mate making two more appearances.
While Assou-Ekotto is currently on loan at Queens Park Rangers, Adebayor is still at the club and will not want his relationship with the Tottenham supporters being threatened even further.
The original photograph received more than 8,000 retweets and prompted fury from the White Hart Lane faithful.
Adebayor had been shunned by boss Andre Villas-Boas, who continued to play Roberto Soldado and Jermain Defoe despite their lack of form in front of goal.
The Portuguese boss was sacked yesterday, paying the price for the humiliating Liverpool defeat, which could boost the Togo striker's chances of featuring in the first team.
Caretaker boss Tim Sherwood will lead the club into their Capital One Cup tie against West Ham on Wednesday but there has been no confirmation whether Adebayor will be involved.
