After declaring himself equal to Steve Jobs, Beethoven and God, news that Kanye West has pronounced himself as the ‘next Nelson Mandela’ may have sounded plausible.
However, a false news report about the Bound 2 rapper, 36, saying just that has gone viral and been taken seriously in some quarters – prompting outrage among music fans.
Satirical website the Daily Currant ran a story on Friday which included quotes purportedly from Kanye saying: ‘Mandela was working in South Africa, which has, like what, six people? I started my magic here in the USA and then I took my business global… I liberate minds with my music. That’s more important than liberating a few people from apartheid or whatever.’

Some people online interpreted the story as real, and at least two websites in South Africa published stories on the quotes before realising their mistake and deleting them.
Referring to the near three decades that Mandela spent in jail, one person wrote on Twitter: ‘Kanye West said he’s gonna be the next Nelson Mandela.  Let’s start him off with 27 years in jail.’
‘Jusy wanna say f*** you for saying you better than Nelson Mandela,’ said another outraged fan, while another echoed those words saying: ‘Kanye West is a f***ing fool. He needs to shut his f***ing mouth.’
