AMAZING: Doctors made the amazing discovery after admitting the woman to hospital with abdominal cramps [ITN]
The 82-year-old was rushed to hospital in Bogota, Colombia, where doctors thought she was suffering from a simple case of gastroenteritis, an infection of the stomach and bowel.
However an X-ray revealed the woman had a rare case of lithopaedion or "stone baby".
The condition occurs when a foetus does not develop in the uterus due to it having moved elsewhere.
One in 11,000 pregnancies develop into a "stone baby" and it is not uncommon for women to be totally unaware of it due to their bodies being shielded from the dead tissue.
Dr Natalie Burger told NBC News: "Usually an ectopic pregnancy will mean a [fallopian] tubal pregnancy, but in a small percentage of cases, the pregnancy can actually occur in the abdominal cavity - in places like the bowel, the ovary, or even on the aorta.
"These are very rare locations and they can be very dangerous."
