Unlike what's usually the norm when England team is coming home from a football tournament. England’s flop footballers arrived home – not to the heroes’ welcome they would have wanted but to complete indifference. Roy Hodgson’s squad flew back from Brazil in an unmarked private plane after recording the country’s worst-ever showing at a World Cup.
The Football Association did lay on a fleet of Mercedes to whisk the players to their multi-million-pound homes. But the likes of captain Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard looked suitably dejected as they trudged back on to British soil.
According to www.metro.co.uk, only a handful of people looked on as the team landed, arriving first at Manchester Airport before the southern-based footballers flew to Luton.
‘We accept we have failed and we will do our best to put it right before 2016.’
Despite not being among the pre-tournament favourites to lift the trophy, England set off across the Atlantic in high spirits.
But, a big but, you got to earn the round of 16.
