FG Criticises States For Not Prioritising Education, Meanwhile ASUP Has Been On Strike For Nearly One Year Now!
The Federal Government has taken a swipe at some state governments for not prioritising educational development in their states despite Nigeria's 10.5 million out of school children.
It also disclosed that N53 billion funds budgeted for basic education in states lie un-accessed because of the failure of the state governments to provide counterpart funding.
It also disclosed that N53 billion funds budgeted for basic education in states lie un-accessed because of the failure of the state governments to provide counterpart funding.
The Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike who spoke during the presentation of the scorecard of the Ministry in Abuja Thursday said such state governments only pretend to make education a priority, but have refused to take concrete steps to develop the sector.
Meanwhile in a seeming demonstration of irony, the Federal Government is the one who has not been taking education seriously, as students of various Nigerian polytechnics have blamed the protracted industrial action by their lecturers on the unseriousness of government officials involved in the negotiations aimed at ending the long lingering strike.
The ten months old industrial action has paralysed academic activities in major polytechnics in Nigeria. The refusal of the Federal Government to reach a compromise with the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, has caused the strike to linger for so long.
Sources gathered that for the second consecutive week, the government representatives expected to attend a meeting scheduled by the Senate committee on education, were absent.
According to ASUP National President, Chibuzo Asomugha, “the Senators were disappointed that the government representatives failed to attend the negotiation meeting for the second consecutive week.
