Woman With No Vagina Or Womb Takes Brave Step To Tell Her Story On TV

Kelly Smith, 22, has Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome – a rare condition meaning she was born without a womb and a 2cm deep vagina.
While she could never bear children Miss Smith has fully working ovaries and would be able to provide eggs to have children through surrogacy. She found out the shocking news aged 17, which not only meant she could not have children but also that sexual intercourse was not an option.
Speaking to the Channel 4 health show Embarrassing Bodies, Miss Smith said: ‘It’s very isolating and you feel like a freak, especially when not even doctors are aware of it. It’s a lot to take in, especially at the age of 17 when you are full of hormones as it is.’ The syndrome affects 1 in 5,000 people and normally means a missing uterus in women and no genitalia at all in men.
While she did have a boyfriend aged 19, she did not think it right to keep him in a relationship without sex. Miss Smith is now undergoing a non-surgical treatment called dilatotherapy which gradually stretches the vagina over 6 months to a year, and she is experiencing really positive results.
This is one brave woman to go TV and highlight a little-known condition that affects approximately just over 12,500 people across the UK. Source: www.metro.co.uk
