#South African Athlete Oscar Pistorius Sentenced To Five Years In Jail

One of the most high profile cases in the history of South Africa as a country has come to an end presumably.

South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been jailed for five years for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine's day 2013. A case that received global broadcasts and international recognition.

Judge Thokozile Masipa, issuing the ruling in court in Pretoria, also gave Pistorius a three-year suspended sentence for a firearms charge. Pistorius has now been led out to the cells where he is due to begin his sentence.

The details surrounding the sentence indicates he could be in jail for only 10 months and then out on state monitor.

The prosecution had called for a minimum 10-year sentence, while the defence sorted for community service and house arrest. Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide but cleared of murder.
