You would imagine as we are usually told, the Nigerian police parades criminals on capture as a way of naming, shaming and dithering others from taking up the part of crime. But on this occasion the Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday was said to have paraded two dogs that attacked four-year-old Omonigho Abraham in the Igando area of the state.
Ha! Maybe this was to name and shame the dogs and to possibly dither other potential attack dogs from attacking people or face being paraded in the public.......Jobless Nija police!
The police, while parading the two German shepherd dogs at its headquarters in Ikeja, added that the dogs had been examined and had been found to be disease-free. To make the matter worse, he said only a court of law could decide whether the two attack dogs-would be put to sleep, even after the 4 year old Omonigho was said to have asked the police and the government to make sure the dogs were killed.
The Commissioner of Police, Cornelius Aderanti, said it was important to parade the dogs so that the public would be convinced that the dogs were still in police custody, and had not been released as was being rumoured.
In his words, “We have brought the dogs out so that the public would know that they are still in police custody. They have been examined and they show no negative trait. It is only the court that will decide what happens to them. The police cannot decide to kill the dogs,” the police commissioner said.
