Understandably, many people were offended and during one confrontation the ‘Black Petes’ (Zwarte Piet) were asked to leave by a woman who was clearly quite distressed by what they were wearing.
At one point they were met by a perplexed Russell Brand who told them: ‘What this tradition does, is it dehumanises people that are of a different ethnicity and it reduces them to a lower status of either toys or a degenerative role as servants.
‘In this country we think of Holland as a very advanced nation with advanced social principles, so it’s very surprising to see this kind of tradition.’
