#How The "Looming" Greatest Environmental Threat To Nigeria Is Now A Vital Source Of Life - GEJ Achievements

As someone from an Agricultural background by training, I need not be told the importance of water resources to the development of a nation or the dangers of erosion of any kind to a nation's source of livelihood. A lot has been said about the achievements of the Goodluck Jonathan administration in the Agricultural sector, but have you heard about this one?

According to the Federal Ministry Of Water Resources,  Kashimbilla Multipurpose Buffer Dam Project is located between the towns of Kashimbilla and Gamovo on River Katsina-Ala in Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State. The dam is principally intended to check the threat of flood from the structurally weak volcanic Lake Nyos, located in the high Bamenda Plateau (300m above sea level) upstream along the Cameroun line of volcanic activity . This disaster, if allowed to occur, will affect the States of Taraba, Benue, Cross River, Kogi and Delta.

The eruption of the Lake which took place on August 21, 1986, in Cameroun, released thousands of tonnes of poisonous gas (carbon dioxide) and, caused extensive flooding resulting in the death of 1,700 people, 3,000 herds of cattle and other livestock.
Other PURPOSES of the Dam include:
Water Supply (60,000 Cu.m/Day)
Irrigation (Net – 2,000Ha)
Hydropower generation (40MW)
SCOPE OF WORK
Construction of the Main Dam;
Construction of Water Treatment Plant;
Construction of an Access Road;
Construction of an Hydropower Plant;
Development of Irrigation Network;
Construction of Air Strip and
Rehabilitation of Kashimbilla - Jato-Aka road (21km)

PROGRESS

To date, remarkable progress has been achieved in all the various parts of the project which is now 95% and ready for commissioning February 2015.
Some of the  works include:
- Access Road
- Staff Housing Unit
- Construction of the Dam
- Hydropower Plant
- Water Treatment Plant
- Air Strip
- Pipeline for Water Conveyance to Takum town and environs.

No nation on earth developed or developing can ever talk of any meaningful achievement for it's people without a fundamental foundation such as this. This kind of project is better called a nation's ''Bedrock'' for further developments and progress.
