A mother whose three-year-old son was kidnapped by her estranged husband claims to have seen the child being used in shocking Islamic State propaganda.
Lidia Solana Herrera said she last saw her son Ismail in November 2013, when she left the boy with her husband Ismar Mesinovic while she visited relatives in Cuba, the UK Telegraph reports.
But rather than babysit Ismail, Ms Herrera said Mesinovic took the boy from their home in Italy and travelled to Syria, where he apparently signed up to fight with IS.
Mesinovic has since been killed in the conflict, she said. Now, more than a year after Ismail went missing, Ms Herrera said she saw a photo of her child being used in an IS propaganda campaign
The image, shared on jihadi social media, shows a child dressed in an IS uniform with a black headscarf inscribed in Arabic. He has a tiny AK-47 machine gun slung over his shoulder.
“That child is Ismail,” Ms Herrera told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, in an interview translated by the Telegraph. “I pray every day that he will be brought back to me. I hope that he will come back here beside me. I think only of him, only him.”
In a separate appearance on Italian TV, Ms Herrera acknowledged that there are many other mothers in her situation.
“But my son is alone, and we don’t know why he isn’t with family, neither with my husband’s family nor mine,” she said.
