Pope Francis Elevates 20 New Cardinals

    Pope Francis inducted 20 new cardinals into the Church’s most exclusive club on Saturday, urging his new Princes of the Church to be patient, kind, respectful, and docile, and several of them told Crux this week that they’ve gotten the memo in terms of what Francis expects.
“The cardinalate is certainly an honor, but it is not honorific,” Francis told the prelates in Saturday’s consistory ceremony.

The new eminences were presented with scarlet-red birettas and gold rings at a ceremony in St. Peter’s Basilica. They were joined by Francis’ predecessor, emeritus Pope Benedict XVI, who took a seat in the front row.

The 87-year-old seemed cheerful as he sat cloaked in his white papal garments in the midst of the red-robed cardinals. He and Francis hugged at the start of the ceremony and shook hands at the end.
Francis insisted that the new cardinals must be men of charity.


“You’re incardinated in the Church of Rome, which presides over the entire assembly of charity,” he said, adding that in the Church, leadership flows from charity, must be exercised in charity, and is ordered toward charity.
