In what looks a tit for tat scenario, Russia has reportedly offered to sell powerful and advanced anti-aircraft missiles to Iran in a deal that could have an impact on nuclear talks approaching a deadline next month. You would recall Russian has been hit by a number of crippling sanction by the United States and the European Union over the annexation of Crimea and her continued militarization of the Ukraine crisis.

Sergei Chemezov, head of the Russian state arms conglomerate Rostec, was quoted by the Tass news agency as saying the firm was willing to supply Tehran with Anstey-2500 missiles with the capability of intercepting and destroying ballistic and cruise missiles as well as aircraft. Chemezov said Tehran was considering the offer.

If the sale goes ahead, the missiles are likely to represent a significant defence against any future air strikes aimed at Iran’s nuclear facilities, and so could in theory diminish pressure on Iran to come to an agreement in nuclear negotiations.

Conversely, if the talks fail, a missile deal could raise pressure from Israel and from US hawks for military action before the delivery of the Russian weapons makes air strikes riskier and less effective.
