Okorocha Cancels Free Education In Imo, Orders VC To Comply With Immediate Effect

The governor of Imo state, Mr. Rochas Okorocha has cancelled the free education policy in Imo state, citing lack of funds for sustenance as the major reason. Unconfirmed reports from sources at the state owned university, IMSU, has confirmed to NewsDay Reporters that the governor has given the directives as part of the condition to pay the lecturers who had embarked in an industrial action for weeks.

NewsDay Reporters recalls that the Academic Staff Union of University, ASUU, IMSU chapter embarked an indefinite for non-payment of lecturer's salary for several months. Within 24 hours the lecturers called off their strike came the news of the cancellation of the free education policy.

Meanwhile, Governor Rochas Okorocha has also directed the VC of Imo state university, IMSU, to comply with the directives with "immediate effect" and start collecting tuition fees from students and prospective students.

The government could not comment on the free education cancellation story as calls put across to the number of the Governor’s SSA on media, Mr. Sam Onwuemodo was not answered nor returned as at the time of filing in this.
