Youths from the South East and South-South states under the aegis of the South East-South South Progressive Youths Front, SE-SS PYF, yesterday appealed to President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, to appoint former Abia State governor, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, as Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, to compensate the South East for losing out in the race for the Senate presidency and speaker-ship of the House of Representatives. The youths, who spoke during an emergency meeting in Owerri, Imo State capital, also appealed to the president-elect to consider the youths in appointive positions to enable them contribute their quota to building a NEW Nigeria.
National president of the group, Godstime Samuel; National secretary, Ugochukwu Victor; Director of Information, Oghwere Henry and vice president Alao Odion Ahmed, who were in attendance, urged Buhari to reserve the position of Minister of Youths and Sports Development for a youth that would effectively galvanise and impact positively on youths under the Ministry. In a motion moved by Director of Information (Oghwere) and seconded by the vice president (Ahmed), the youth body passed a vote of confidence on Onu as a detribalised Nigerian, who had contributed immensely to the unity of the nation.
According to the group, the support for Onu as theNEXT SGF was influenced by his visible contributions to the development of the nation’s democracy, adding that his style of politics is a source of inspiration for Nigerian youths. In a communique issued at the end of the meeting, the youths drawn from the all the local government areas of the South East and South-South states, expressed willingness to work with the in-coming administration, especially in the area of checking youth restiveness.
