We May Negotiate With Boko Haram, President Buhari Makes A U-Turn

I could vividly recall the answer General Muhammadu Buhari gave to a BBC reporter sometime earlier in the year when the reporter confronted him while he attended Emir Sanusi's coronation. The BBC reporter in the heat of INEC moving forward the date of the general election, one of the reasons being that Boko Haram need to be curtailed in some local governments areas in the North East. ''What is Boko Haram'' the then GMB replied with a harsh voice. Giving Nigerians the 'now known' force hope, that if elected he will get rid of Boko within weeks of assuming office.
Little did we know that the activities of this evil dreaded Islamic group will still continue to kill Nigerians in the alarming numbers, as being reported. If I'm not mistaken, Boko Haram may have killed more Nigerians in the 30 days of PMB's reign, than in the last six months of GEJ's administration,  whom they conspired and got rid of, sighting laxity in confronting Boko Haram.

What is happening today? The Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, on Friday, disclosed in an interview with the BBC, that the Federal Government has said that it is open to negotiations with the Boko Haram sect in order to find a lasting solution to the security crisis in the country, if the group is willing. In the interview, Adesina said the Federal Government was not ruling out negotiations with the sect if it would put an end to the activities of the group, stating that the insurgents had attacked so many villages and killed scores of people.

When BBC asked if the Federal Government was considering negotiations with the insurgent group, Adesina said: “If they are willing, why not? You know attempts have been made for negotiations in the past and they didn’t work. Every reasonable person would want to see the end to this insurgency. So if they are willing, why not? You can't rule that out.” “These were very vicious attacks. People were killed in scores and it’s so sad,” he said.

We hope President Buhari is not taking Nigerians for a ride, though it is still too early to draw the line, even though he gave us force impression prior  to his victory at polls, backed by his inaugural speech.
