Bayelsa 2015: APC Split Over Support For Former Gov. Timipre Sylva As Guber Candidate

Indications have emerged that all may not be well in the camp of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State, following internal bickering over choice of candidate ahead of the December 5 governorship elections in the state, dailypost.ng reports. Aspirants under the platform of the party have split into opposing factions, following high-tensed political manoeuvring to outwit one another since former governor Timipre Sylva entered the race.

An APC chieftain in the state, Chief Francis Perekeme Abadi, in a statement Thursday in Yenagoa, called on the national leadership of the party to take urgent steps to check what he described as the “excesses of some governorship aspirants.”

He warned that if the political antagonism brought about by the splitting of aspirants into camps was not checked, the party risked losing the December 5 election to the ruling PDP in the state. Abadi, who is a staunch supporter of one of the governorship aspirants, Chief Ndutimi Alaibe, specifically accused the state chairman of the APC, Chief Tiwe Orunimigha of openly supporting the aspiration of a former governor of the state, Chief Timipre Sylva. He accused the party chairman, who he said supposed to stand neutral on the choice of who emerges the party flag-bearer, of undue access to the delegates’ list for the forthcoming party primary election.

Abadi warned that should the party fail to nip the ensuing crisis in the bud, it could lead to an implosion which, he said, would rubbish all they had laboured for over time.

“This warning is coming against the backdrop of glaring division and needless bickering amongst the various aspirants and their supporters over the purported hijack of delegates list by former governor, Timipre Sylva.

“It is unfair for our chairman to show clear bias by supporting a particular aspirant and as a favoured aspirant against the interest of the generality of the party members in the state.

“This is worrisome especially when it is clear that his favoured aspirant stands no chance of winning in any election given the fact that he has loads of political baggage to contend with”, he said.
Abadi contended that the moment Sylva emerged as flag bearer, the party may collapse because of what he said would amount to “contradiction of interest and purpose”.

“This possible scenario does not augur well for our collective interest as a party and except something is done urgently by the national leadership, the outcome may be disastrous”, Abadi added.

You would recall the Nigerian anti-corruption commission is still on the neck of Chief Sylva over monies he plundered while serving as Bayelsa State governor eight years ago, even after  haven recovered not less than N3.5 billion in cash and an undisclosed number of high profile property in Abuja. This as you know was made known recently during the hearing of a petition filed against the EFCC boss in Abuja.

I wonder how unearth people like Chief Sylva could still be allowed to hold public office haven looted Bayelsa State Treasury during his first mission as governor. I know you would say. why not, since Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai after all that was disclosed of him while he served as FCT minister is today a state governor and Audu has long secured his State guber ticket, all under the platform of the ruling APC. Sai Buhari!
