Russian Airstrike Killed Over 40 In A Popular Syrian Marketplace

At least 40 people were killed and dozens more wounded in a suspected Russian air strike on a crowded marketplace in Idlib province. The strike hit a popular market on Sunday in the town of Ariha, north-west Syria, which is controlled by the Army of Conquest, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said.

Several areas of the town were hit and rescue operations are under way with scores of people critically wounded. The pro-opposition Orient TV reported an initial death toll of 40. However, Rami Abdulrahman, director of the observatory, put the death toll much higher, saying at least 70 people were killed in the attack.

This is said to be one of the deadliest incidents since Moscow began launching airstrikes in Syria two months ago. The SOHR says Russian strikes have killed more than 400 civilians, including 166 women and children.

Moscow says it targets ISIS and other “terrorists,” but critics accuse it of targeting other rebel groups more than ISIS. And their argument appears to have gained weight after today’s attacks as the province is not a stronghold of ISIS, which controls wide areas of eastern Syria.
