Pope Francis was back to work this morning after cancelling a planned visit to a hospital to say Mass due to flu. The 78-year-old Pontiff according to witnesses looked tired but smiled frequently during the meeting. He later delivered a speech to a visiting delegation from the Orthodox church sitting down.
There were Fears after he was unable to stand at the official event, explaining that he was 'not feeling strong.' Addressing Vatican officials in a Christmas speech on Monday, Francis said he had the flu. He said:
'Dear brothers and sisters, Forgive me for not standing up as I speak to you, but for some days I've been suffering from flu and I am not feeling very strong. With your permission, I'll speak to you sitting down.' The pope has been unsteady of his feet at times in recent months, stumbling several times in public. Last week he celebrated his 79th birthday.
However, Vatican spokesman Rev Federico Lombardi said the 78-year-old Argentinian was able to continue with his diary for the weekend and that there were 'no concerns for his health'. The Pope said Mass as normal on Friday morning but felt tired after a gruelling couple of weeks and was unable to complete his planned visit.
