Mr James Ibori ,convicted former Delta state governor, who regained freedom from a UK prison after serving half of his 13 years sentence last year December, has said he will be coming back to Nigeria asap. Speaking to the BBC, Mr Ibori said, he will be appealing his 2012 conviction by a UK court.
You would recall the fraudster former Delta State governor was convicted in 2012 and sentenced to a 13-year jail term in a UK prison for stealing #50 million British pounds from Delta state government.
In his words; "Yes I am of course. I have made that decision and I have instructed my solicitors". Asked why he wants to appeal a conviction which he pleaded guilty to, the former governor who was once a London DIY store cashier said he doesn't want to discuss that.
"Ibori claims that the police who investigated him were themselves corrupt. "All allegations of corruption against the police force must be taken with the utmost seriousness and independently investigated, and those found guilty should be held accountable," it said.
"But this should have no bearing on the guilt of an individual who amassed an astonishing personal fortune, whilst his notional official salary as a state governor would typically have been no more than $25,000 annually," it said.
"Attempts to mask his own corrupt dealings by highlighting corruption elsewhere must not be allowed to prevail."
Mr Ibori however said the next plan for him now is to come back to Nigeria in a matter of days.
