Babatunde Adepoju, a witness in the corruption trial of Justice Adeniyi Ademola has alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari once gave the embattled judge N500,000 while his certificate controversy was pending before the federal high court judge, Premium Times reports.
You would recall a citizen filed a law suit at the build-up to the 2015 general election challenging Mr. Buhari to present his WAEC certificate as required by law.
Justice Ademola is being prosecuted by the office of the attorney-general of the federation for alleged corruption. He has denied the charges and requested accelerated hearing at the trial in Abuja.
Although the witness said he did not consider the offer as bribe, he said the money was given through the president’s former lawyer, Kola Awodeyin.
During the May 26, 2016, hearing of the Buhari certificate case, Mr Buhari raised an objection to the suit, challenging the mode of service of the originating summons on him. However, Justice Ademola, in his ruling, had held that it was incompetent and upheld the service of the originating court processes on Buhari.
Mr Ademola held that the service of the court’s processes on the president through the secretariat of the party was in order, saying the service would still reach to candidate Buhari.
Dissatisfied with this ruling, Buhari through his legal team filed a notice of appeal at the court of appeal, Abuja judicial division on seven grounds of appeal.
The story is still developing as more details are expected to be published asap.
