DEADLY ONLINE DIET PILLS CLAIM ANOTHER BRITISH LIFE

The tragic death of a teenage rugby player sparked concern over the sale of toxic fat busting pills on the internet.DNP is being sold as a dieting aid, leading to 16 deaths in the UK alone [GETTY]

Chris Mapletoft was found dead after taking a chemical widely sold online as a quick-fix diet aid.
The 18-year-old A-level pupil at Hampton School in west London is the 16th and youngest British victim of 2,4-dinitrophenol, or DNP, a chemical used in pesticides and dyes. “DNP is an industrial poison with no legitimate use as a medicine. It can lead, as in this tragic case, to death from overheating” A police spokesperson

A verdict of accidental death was recorded at an inquest at West London Coroner’s Court last week.
DNP is widely available on the internet with US suppliers offering 200mg capsules for just £2.20.
A police spokesman said: “DNP is an industrial poison with no legitimate use as a medicine. It interferes with how the body gets energy from fat. This can lead, as in this tragic case, to death from overheating.”
