The death toll since 9/11 terror attacks has now reached more than 160,000.
The names of all the 2,973 victims who died 12 years ago will be read out during a remembrance ceremony today at the Ground Zero site in New York.
But tens of thousands of other people had their fates sealed when al-Qaida fanatics crashed aircraft in the US.
It is claimed 160,131 people, including soldiers, contractors and civilians, have died as a direct result of the terrorist outrages which shocked the world on September 11, 2001.

UK and US academics who compiled the statistics say 444 British service personnel are among 3,372 troops killed in the resulting Afghan war.
The 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were the catalyst for many more deaths around the world.
They included a 2002 nightclub bombing in Bali, a 2004 blast in Madrid, terrorist attacks on Mumbai hotels in 2008, and the 7/7 London bombings which claimed 52 lives in 2005.
And in Iraq more than 125,000 people have been killed since 2003, including 179 Brits.
