Anthony Cannon found the cute toy animal on Thursday along his route in North Carolina which had an improvised explosive device (IED) inside it.
When the 42-year-old picked the teddy bear up a container fell out, which he took to his cousin's house to have a closer inspection of.
After examining the cylindrical item, which was a liquid filled bottle with wires coming out of it, he suspected it was dangerous and called 911.
Mr Cannon added: "Within about two minutes of walking up, they said it was an IED and cleared us out of the house."
Cleveland County sheriff Alan Norman said Mr Cannon was lucky not to have been seriously injured or killed after picking up the IED.
However, Mr Cannon said he is happy he picked the bear from the road and saved a child from grabbing the dangerous device.
He said: "If a kid had walked down the road and seen that bear, I’m pretty sure they would have picked it up." A Daily Star UK report.
