A PASSER-BY was fearing for his life when a pair of fire tongs were thrown straight through his head.

In a graphic X ray shot, the instrument can be seen going through one side of the man's skull and coming out of his forehead.

Zhang Xuecheng was struck by the foot-long metal object as he walked home from work one evening.

The tongs were said to have been thrown by a man aiming for a stray dog that had taken some of his bacon.

Mr Zhang, from Taoyuan Town, southern China's Human Province, somehow survived the extraordinary incident after lengthy surgery.

Medical experts said the fortunate man was very close to dying.

Chief surgeon Pu Yuejin said: "The fire tongs were only a tiny space away from the neck artery, which could have cost his life."

Mr Zhang is now recovering in hospital but may have a sore head in the morning.
