A woman managed to convince her boyfriend and her entire town that she was expecting quintuplets even though she wasn’t even pregnant.
After 34 weeks of receiving gifts and donations from neighbours and convincing her boyfriend to buy five cots, it eventually turned out the woman had made it all up.
Reports have since emerged that suggest this is not the first time the woman, who has deliberately not been named, has pulled off this type of hoax and she is now undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.
The woman’s friend even set up a Facebook page and as her story became known many people in her Canadian hometown showered the couple with gifts.
It finally became clear that it was a hoax when the couple went to hospital and blood tests revealed she was not pregnant.
Doctors said this could have been a phantom pregnancy whereby the woman was so psychologically convinced she was pregnant that her body began to adapt – although they did also concede she may have had an ulterior motive and could have falsified the physical changes.
‘This isn’t the first time she’s done it,’ an unnamed male relative told the Toronto Sun. ‘But honestly, we never would have thought she was sick enough to do it again.’
Her partner has now written on the couple’s Facebook page and promised to hand back any gifts or donations that were given. Metronews.com
