The twins, named Faith and Hope by their mother Renee Young, are one of only 35 known cases with their condition ever to exist.
Ms Young and her partner Simon Howie, of Tregear in Sydney, Australia, discovered there was an abnormality in the pregnancy when the mother-of-seven went for an ultrasound at 19 weeks.
Although doctors warned there could be serious health and social implications for the girls, the couple decided against an abortion.
The babies were born by emergency caesarean at 32 weeks at Blacktown Hospital, west of Sydney, before being transferred shortly afterward to the Children's Hospital at Westmead.
One of doctors' biggest fears was that the girls would be unable to breathe by themselves, but they have defied the odds and are now stable and breathing without assistance.
