A charity shop sofa turned out to be a real bargain for three US students when they discovered $40,000 (£24,000) in cash hidden inside it. While others may have been tempted to keep the money, the kind-hearted roommates, living in New York, decided to track down the person who gave the couch away- a 91-year-old widow.
Reese Werkhoven, who noticed the arm cushions on the piece of furniture were weirdly lumpy, opened up a cushion zip and found an envelope stuffed with cash. Along with his friends, Cally Guasti and Lara Russo, the excited trio then unzipped more sections of the $55 (£33) Salvation Army sofa where they found more money in bubble-wrap envelopes. ‘We just pulled out envelopes and envelopes,’ said Ms Guasti.
‘My mouth was literally hanging open… it was an unfathomable amount. ‘We put it all on a bed,’ Ms Guasti added. ‘We laid it all out and started counting. And we were screaming. In the morning, our neighbours were like, “We thought you won the lottery.”’
They later found a deposit slip with the woman’s name on and managed to track her down. The woman’s family had donated the couch to the Salvation Army while she was having health problems. Ms Guasti said the elderly woman, who wished to remain nameless, cried in gratitude when they gave her back the cash. A www.metro.co.uk extract.
