Thousands of chickens were burned alive after the lorry transporting them to the market suddenly caught fire. Most of the birds were unable to escape their small metal cages and died in the flames.
The driver said he managed to free several hundred chickens but the majority of the 10,000 birds burned to death in their cages, despite a fire truck arriving later. ‘I have lost a lot of money,’ he said. ‘But it was also terrible to see the birds being burnt alive.’
A police spokesperson said they were investigating the fire, which happened in Suizhou, Hubei province.
Wang Ho, a homeless man, told local TV that it was good news for him. ‘Me and others heard about it on the grapevine, everyone was talking about it, there was cooked chicken for everyone,’ he said.
‘Some of it was a bit charred, but a lot of it was still good enough meat to be eaten.’ A metro.co.uk extract.
