An expectant mum popped out for some last minute shopping this afternoon and got slightly more than she bargained for when she went into labour outside her local Primark in Birmingham. Perhaps already able to sniff out a good deal, her new baby girl made a very speedy entrance into the world, in front of crowds which had gathered to help on the pavement outside the store.
The labour reportedly lasted less than 10 minutes. The new mum was believed to have been on her own but passersby soon came to her aid and called an ambulance.
Primark security and store staff brought out sheets and towels to preserve the lady’s dignity and make her as comfortable as possible. As helpers placed the new baby onto her mum’s chest amid cheers from the crowd, the ambulance arrived to ferry the pair to City Hospital.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson has confirmed mum and daughter are now ‘doing OK’. Reports that the little girl has been named Primarni are so far unsubstantiated.
Now, maybe (*probably*) it’s an urban myth but we’ve heard tell that if you have a baby in M&S or Mothercare, you get free gift vouchers – we’re planning to spend a lot of time in Selfridges during our final trimester for that very reason.
