Two thirds of 240 sex workers interviewed by researchers at Leeds University and charity National Ugly Mugs said the work was ‘fun’ while 91% said it was ‘flexible’. The research is the first of its kind to focus on a large sample of workers in the industry, metro UK reports.
‘This research challenges this perspective. It is clear from this research that recognising sex work as work and acknowledging its diversity is crucial. ‘Policy makers fall into the trap of assuming that they know better and introducing sweeping proposals intended to “save” sex workers.’
Sex workers said that they found the stigma attached to their profession more of a negative aspect than exploitation. Dr Teela Sanders, principal study researcher, recommended that sex workers ‘be allowed to legally work together’ to enhance their safety, metro reports.
