Sturgeon: We Won't Wreck Westminster. Salmond: Oh Yes We Will! Ex-SNP Leader Sparks New Rift As He Insists Scotland Will Become Independent
A dramatic split between Scottish Nationalist leaders Nicola Sturgeon and Alex Salmond opened yesterday over whether Scotland should remain part of the UK. Former SNP leader Salmond, who won a Commons seat on Thursday, claimed the party's General Election landslide has moved Britain closer to a break-up. But Ms Sturgeon appeared to contradict him, by pledging that the 56 SNP MPs who won seats last week would not seek to drive a wedge between England and Scotland.
‘They are certainly not coming down to wreck Westminster,’ she told The Mail on Sunday on Friday, during a visit to London to attend the VE Day commemorations. The emphatic statement was in line with her insistence throughout the election that it was nothing to do with independence and that last year’s referendum was a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’. However, in stark contrast, Salmond said yesterday that the SNP’s success was another ‘staging post’ in the road towards separation.
