New York City Settles Eric Garner's Family With $5.9m, Taxpayers’ Responded, He ‘Isn’t A Martyr’

New York City has reached A settlement with the family of Eric Garner, who died after being put in a choke-hold by police last July, agreeing toPAY $5.9 million to resolve the claim over his death. The family had filed a $75million lawsuit against the city but accepted a pretrial settlement on Monday.

His death sparked protests around the country by people outraged over police treatment of African Americans. Mobile phone video of the fatal encounter showed Garner saying 'I can't breath' 11 times while being held on the ground by an NYPD officer in a choke-hold. He was being arrested for allegedly illegally selling cigarettes when he died. The family say the settlement is not victory!
However, there has been anger on the streets of New York, as residence react to the huge sum that's been paid out to Garner's family.
It is an unpopular opinion here; to pay out all that money, isn't good, one Bea Arroyo said. ''The city is paying that $5.9 million out, but it's not coming from their pocket, it's coming out of our taxes.''

Another residence named Eric Visicoso said; Eric Garner isn't a martyr.

Though the cops caught on cam chocking him to death were cleared of any criminal charges by the jury last year, they are said to still be under investigation.
