Disturbing And Violent Campaign For Jungle Justice In Peru Goes Viral

A Facebook campaign has gone wild in the South American nation of Peru, where people are being encouraged to carry out acts of vigilante justice. Since the campaign started hundreds of people started posting pictures and videos of themselves catching and punishing petty criminals.

The ‘Catch Your Thief’ movement is appealing to lots of Peruvians who are fed up with spates of crime. It all started after one neighbourhood refused to call the police, warning they would ‘lynch’ the culprits instead. Punishments ranges from being stripped naked, named and whipped in public, to being forced to perform tough military style exercises.

One video shows a woman undressed and being walked through a busy street, with a banner around her neck reading ‘I’m a thief’. Another shows two whimpering alleged pickpockets being forced to stand on anthills until they beg for mercy as the insects bite their legs, feet and private parts.

This new pragmatic justice system is being used to deter would-be thieves, with local people drastically losing faith in the police force’s ability to curb crime. The campaign is in danger of spiralling out of control though, with a number of disturbing Facebook pages rearing their heads since its inception.

For instance; ‘Catch your thief and leave him paralysed’, ‘Catch your thief and cut off his hands’ and ‘Catch your thief and castrate him’ are all pages that have appeared online. In some areas well-organised groups of vigilantes – known as ‘rondas urbanas’ – have formed which patrol the streets, dishing out punishments on alleged troublemakers Source; Viralthread
