The video posted online shows armed men around an alleged Russian pilot who seems to be unconscious and immobile. His face is bruised and bloodied. The men seem to be happy and are praising Allah, with some regretting that they hadn’t burned him on the spot.
According to reports the men involved were speaking Arabic and have a Latakia dialect. Reuters suggest that the footage was posted online by a rebel group that operates in the northwestern area of Syria. Islamic state, who have beheaded captives in the past, are said to have no known presence in this area. However, other groups including the Free Syrian Army are active.
The second Russian pilot, who was on board the warplane when it was shot down, was not mentioned by an official from the group, who declined to be named for security reasons. Spokesmen say it is too early to draw any conclusions on what happened.
