A special-education teacher in New York allegedly abused disabled children as young as nine while the district covered it up, it has been alleged. According to a court petition, Lisa Weitzman forced one pupil to masturbate in front of the whole class, stamped on pupils’ feet and even performed a lap dance on another, metro.co.uk reports.
The notice of claim also alleges she turned the classroom bathroom into a time-out zone and tied up children’s wrists and ankles. Gerald Misk, the attorney for the five ‘severely disabled’ pupils, filed the precursory notice of claim on April 1, against Long Beach Public Schools.
Misk told Huffington Post he is seeking $5 million from the district for each of the five victims plus punitive damages. He said: ‘While I have seen other instances of abuse that have been appalling, this one is worse because these are the most vulnerable children. ‘The families trusted this teacher and the school and had their trust destroyed.’
According to the court document, the school district set up a fact-finding team that ‘apparently confirmed the allegations’ against Weitzman. It adds that at least 11 teacher’s assistants filed complaints about Weitzman over the past seven years but none were ever investigated. Metro Uk
