The emotional dad, 54, shed his Mr Nasty image when he broke down in the delivery room with girlfriend Lauren, 37. Hospital staff watched as Simon told her: “This is the most magical moment of my life.”
The X Factor boss was so overwhelmed, he offered luxury holidays to hospital staff just moments later to show his gratitude. “He was in such a good mood and felt like he owed them all a massive debt for bringing his son into the world safely'' a source said. Just a few hours after the birth he said he wanted to pay for seven of the staff to enjoy a trip to Barbados. He felt it was the least he could do.” A source close to the couple said last night: “They’re both so proud and completely obsessed with Eric. Simon couldn’t stop smiling.” Little Eric was born at New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital on Friday night, weighing 6lb 7oz. Simon named the baby after his late dad, who died in 1999. Simon and his father shared the middle name Philip. He tweeted: “Very happy to say Eric was born at 17.45pm. Healthy and handsome.

“Lauren in great shape. Thanks for all of your kind messages.” He added: “Named after my dad.” Lauren and Eric are expected to stay in their £1,300-a-night room at the hospital until early tomorrow morning. Eric was born two weeks premature and doctors are said to have suggested mother and son stay in for two days “as a precaution”. It is the same hospital where pop diva BeyoncĂ© gave birth to daughter Blue Ivy Carter two years ago. Simon and his family were inundated with presents for baby Eric, including designer clothes, buggies, breast pumps and toys. But he has told staff all gifts should be donated to a charity of the hospital’s choice. Pals say the music mogul was relieved to make it in time after Lauren went into labour while he was still in the UK judging Britain’s Got Talent auditions in London.
According to Dailystar.co.uk, after receiving a call from her just before 6am on Friday, Simon jetted across the Atlantic on the first available British Airways flight. He then raced from JFK airport to the hospital and arrived with three hours to spare. Lauren’s friends in the US city have since visited the “smitten” couple to meet Eric. Simon is now desperate to introduce the newborn to his family based in Britain, including 87-year-old mum Julie. US socialite Lauren, who also has an eight-year-old son with ex-husband Andrew, is expected to remain in New York in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Simon has vowed to scale back work commitments for the next four weeks to spend time with his family. It means he will be forced to commute between the UK and the US to work on the new series of Britain’s Got Talent. He is also expected at the launch of X Factor musical I Can’t Sing in London’s West End in just ten days’ time.
